The Michael Shirtz Quartet finished out their 2011 performance schedule. They spent this past year (and winter 2012) playing for many guest artists, including trumpeter Charles Saenz, saxophonist Brian Lang, singer Ellen Winters, flutist Mark Gridley and tribute concerts to Brubeck, Miles, Ellington and More. With a relatively local Northern Ohio performance schedule, one of the successes of MSQ this past year was establishing the successful run of the new "Jazz @ Eight" series hosted at the Sandusky State Theatre in Sandusky, Ohio. MSQ thanks their fans for coming out to their concerts and gigs, of which most were regularly solid out performances.
MSQ will return to performing in May as the members embark on various projects over the spring. Come back to michaelshirtz.com in March and check out MSQ's summer performance schedule as well as a new interactive website.
Mark Gridley is an active jazz musician, music educator and renown jazz historian/author. His works and writings have been translated into five foreign languages. His articles appear in the Grove Dictionaries of Music, Encyclopedia Britannica, Musical Quarterly, The Black Perspective in Music, The Instrumentalist, and Jazz Educator's Journal. His critically acclaimed textbook JAZZ STYLES has been a mainstay in jazz education for colleges and universities for nearly two decades. His jazz flute playing is both lyrical and unique as the influence of historical studies and knowledge are captured in his sound. It is an honor for Shirtz to work once again with Gridley.
