Payne Nickles & Company presents Michael Shirtz's JAZZ@8 featuring Evelyn Wright's tribute to the Torch Singers with the Michael Shirtz Quartet. Cleveland’s renowned jazz singer, Evelyn Wright with Michael Shirtz is a perfect night of jazz nostalgia. From the sounds of Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday, to the world of Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme, enjoy a tribute to the great torch singers of the American Songbook.
The evening begins with MSQ playing tributes to the blues and the music of West Side Story in honor of Leonard Bernstein's 100th birthday year in 2018. The second half of the evening features acclaimed singer Evelyn Wright joining MSQ for a continuation of blues and tributes to the great Torch Singers such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and more.
A professional vocalist for over 30 plus years, Evelyn has been entertaining like no other in the styles of jazz, R&B and pop. She has opened for the likes of Mel Torme, Joan Rivers, Harry Belafonte, Bob James, Freddie Jackson, Regina Belle among others. Evelyn has toured throughout the U.S and Canada performing in the top nightclubs and concert halls. She had the honor of performing for First Lady Rosalyn Carter, General Colin Powell and Oprah Winfrey.
She was presented the Jazz Legend Award from Tri-C JazzFest in 2008. Other awards include Best Female Vocalist in 1985 in conjunction with public broadcasting station WCPN.
