Shirtz conducts Duruflé's Requiem

Duruflé Requiem

Sunday, March 24, 4:00pm

St. Mary's Catholic Church, Sandusky, Ohio

Michael Shirtz conducts the Firelands Symphony Chorale & Chamber Orchestra in a program featuring the Duruflé Requiem along with works by w Anton Bruckner. The Requiem has become one of the great modern masterworks written in the 20th Century, yet composed using the elements of chant throughout. The nine-movement work is a journey of the traditional requiem text set to lush harmonies and beautiful melodies for chorus, organ, and orchestra.

"I have always greatly admired Duruflé's work, but have never conducted the Requiem. I am excited to work with the Chorale in exploring his compositional artistry and musical treatment of the text. This work is brilliant in how he uses chant, traditional, and contemporary 20th Century textures all in one," share Shirtz.

The Symphony Chorale will perform the Requiem in the beautiful sanctuary of St. Mary's Catholic Church which shares many of the characteristics of the great European churches where many of the great composers wrote their works to be performed. The Chorale will open the concert with "Locus Iste" by Bruckner, written specifically for performances in these types of venues, as well as other selections.
